About the book: "Wisdom of Nomad"
"Wisdom of Nomad" invites all readers fascinated by nature, culture, resilience, and authentic stories on a journey that transcends ordinary narratives. This work presents the 20th-century Yörük (Turkic nomad) culture as a legacy for future generations, offering vivid slices of their lives. It tells the epic story of a people who worked with relentless determination, undeterred by hardship, yet always found time for joy.
Penned through the eyes of a child, an adolescent, and finally an adult, this book presents this unique lifestyle to you, the esteemed reader, in a way that feels almost documentary. Within these pages, you will discover how to craft a whirligig from a cob, a willow whistle, a hat from a bucket grass, and a wooden trough. You will witness scenes of grinding flour in an old mill, making pekmez (grape molasses sweet), and encounter tales of poisonous passions, crimes born of ignorance, and merciless wolves. You will read children's tales and anecdotes. You will be transported to the days before the village's mechanization in the 1970s, a time of threshing with oxen, harvesting with sickles, and hauling wood with horses. You will see how they stored butter and cheese, how they fed their dogs, and how they built their nomadic camps from trees. You will be astonished by traditions that involved enduring the endless grudges of the drunk.
Through its essays and the lessons drawn from events, the book appeals to everyone, from the young to the old, and from villagers to city-dwellers. It is a work that will engage a broad readership, including historians, literary scholars, clergy, social scientists, politicians, and nature enthusiasts. Some of the essays included are:
- The Potential of Turkish as a World Written Language
- Lessons from the Pre-1980 Era of Ideological Brainwashing
- A Call for the Ideal of a Unified Turkey: Why Can't We Set an Example for Civilization?
- How Should Societies Be Structured? An suggestion for weddings
- Balanced Nutrition and Daily Food Requirements
- Healthy Lifestyles
- The Nutrition and Lifestyles of the Yörüks
- Yörük Proverbs...
The book's structure can be summarized as follows: The first part (up to page 63) covers childhood memories and nomadic life in a Yörük village. This is followed by tales of events and adventures in the village, which continue until page 153. The stories in these first three sections are highly cinematic, transporting you back in time as if watching a film unfold in your mind; most can be read aloud to your child.
The remainder of the book (up to page 215) consists of thought-provoking essays on a wide range of subjects, from language and ideology to society and healthy living.
The Turkish version of the book, titled "Göçebelikten Bilgeliğe," has been published as an e-book.
